Conservatives
champion county rail link
The Oxford-Cambridge
arc is a vital economic corridor for the county and should be
supported by a regular, fast train service between the two
cities via Milton Keynes.
This was the call from
Conservative County Councillor Iain Brown (Hanney and Hendreds)
at the meeting of the full council on 1 April.
Cllr Iain Brown
speaking during the debate said:
“Oxfordshire is
well placed to take advantage of an arc of scientific and
economic development stretching from Harwell to Cambridge. But
we will only make the most of this opportunity if we have the
rail infrastructure to support it.
“It is a great
shame that the East of England Regional Assembly is not
supporting this rail service and is, therefore, unnecessarily
putting our economic success at risk.”
The council called on
the East of England Regional Assembly to reverse its decision
and called on Oxfordshire’s local authorities to support the
rail link by means of the planning system.
Cllr Brown added:
“Rather than being
a pie in the sky project, we have a real opportunity to get a
fast, reliable rail service between Oxford and Cambridge.” |
