I was, until recently, an Abingdon Town Councillor where I whet my appetite for local politics and enjoyed helping local people as well as holding the ruling Liberal Democrats to account for their unpopular decisions such as cuts in tourist services and shoddy economic planning. As a member of the Federation of Small Businesses, the largest business organisation in the country, I campaign continuously on behalf of local businesses, which are the backbone of our local economy. Like many others, I have been dismayed by the mismanagement of Abingdon town’s centre by the Liberal Democrat controlled District Council, who have failed to achieve anything that supports our town’s prosperity. Despite having received huge sums of money from the sale of the Tesco & Old Gaol sites and the upgrading of the lease on the precinct, the Liberal Democrats have zero cash-based capital to invest in our town’s development. Abingdon is in need of investment, and the Liberal Democrats have not delivered. Furthermore, having presided over relentless increases in council tax for the last fourteen years, our local district council services are only rated as “fair”, slightly better than “poor” with further cuts planned next year. In today’s economic climate, obtaining value for money for our council taxes is essential. The Conservative controlled County Council, in stark contrast, has kept taxes down over the last four years and is rated as “good”. The cost of running council services can and must be kept in check without damaging essential services. The Conservatives have proven that they deliver proper planning and value for money. We cannot allow our money to be wasted. Abingdon is in need of a change, I hope you will support this change and me on Thursday 4th June. |
